Electrolux refrigerator codes differ completely by generation: current models show Er + a sensor code (Er t1) or Er CE; earlier French-door models show OP, SH or SY + a two-letter code; columns use E5–E9. Match the family to your model number before reading a meaning.

Electrolux single-door refrigerator and freezer columns (EI32AR / EI32AF)
32-inch all-refrigerator (AR) and all-freezer (AF) columns, often installed as a pair.
- When a column's sensor or keypad fails, the control falls back to a timed compressor cycle (or continuous running on freezer units) so food stays cold until repair — the cabinet may then run colder or warmer than set.
- E5 means showroom mode is on — lights and display work but the unit does not cool. It is turned off from the control panel as described in the owner's guide.
- A service flash covers defrost water leaking from the liner seams and out the front on certain all-refrigerator serial ranges, and notes the cabinet should tilt about 1/4 inch to the rear to aid draining.
- The column displays a power-failure alert with duration and cabinet temperature after a long outage, to help decide what food to discard.
| Code | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| E5 | Showroom mode activated | Shown on display |
| E7 | Stuck key; the unit runs in fail-safe mode | Shown on display |
| E8 | Shorted thermistor; the unit runs in thermistor-error mode | Shown on display |
| E9 | Open thermistor; the unit runs in thermistor-error mode | Shown on display |
Electrolux French-door refrigerators ERFC2393 (counter-depth) / ERFG2393 (standard depth)
ERFC/ERFG 2393 French-door models with two ice makers and an internal water dispenser on some versions.
- These models use R600a (isobutane) refrigerant, per the manufacturer's service data sheet.
- Defrost is controlled electronically (adaptive defrost) based on compressor run time rather than a mechanical timer.
- For a fresh-food section that runs too cold on certain serial ranges, the manufacturer's fix concerns the fresh-food damper door being held open (tape, harness or foam interference).
- A 2025 tech tip warns that evaporator fan failures can cause not cooling, intermittent cooling, or even a dead unit with the compressor not running — and that the fan should be checked before electronic parts are replaced.
| Code | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| Er CE | Communication error between the user interface and the main board | Shown on display |
| dI SP | Ice chute flapper not closed | Shown on display |
| Er t1 | Freezer temperature sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t2 | Freezer defrost sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |

| Er t8 | Freezer ice maker temperature sensor | Shown on display |
Electrolux French-door refrigerators EI23BC / EI28BS / EW23BC / EW28BS
EI23BC/EI28BS (ICON/Electrolux) and EW23BC/EW28BS (Wave-Touch) French-door bottom-freezer models; some with a Perfect Temp Drawer.
- The tech sheets for these models list R134a refrigerant.
- Select models use a variable-capacity (inverter) compressor with its own inverter diagnostics.
- SY EF on the display means the control detected a problem in the evaporator fan circuit — the fan that moves cold air from the freezer coil.
- These models have a fresh-food (in-door) ice maker cooled by air from the freezer; bulletins cover fill-tube freezing, defrost monitoring and an air-handler conversion kit for ice problems.
| Code | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| OP | Open thermistor (fresh-food or freezer side of the display shows which) | Shown on display |
| SH | Shorted thermistor (fresh-food or freezer side) | Shown on display |
| SY CF | User interface to main board communication failure on start-up | Shown on display |
| SY CE | User interface to main board communication error after a period of operation | Shown on display |
| SY EF | Evaporator fan circuit failure | Shown on display |
Perfect temp drawer section
| Code | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| 9X | Perfect Temp Drawer: shorted key (X identifies the key) | Shown on display |
| 2X | Perfect Temp Drawer: open sensor | Shown on display |
| 3X | Perfect Temp Drawer: shorted sensor | Shown on display |

Electrolux 4-door counter-depth refrigerator (ERMC2295)
ERMC2295 four-door refrigerator with a variable-temperature convertible zone (VCZ).
- The ERMC2295 uses R600a refrigerant, per the manufacturer's service data sheet.
- A blank display, 88 88 or Er CE on this model is diagnosed as a possible harness fault between the door display, the convertible-zone display and the main board before boards are replaced.
- Low or no ice from the fresh-food ice maker can be caused by corrosion of the ice maker fan or its connector; the fan orientation keeps moisture away from the connector.
- Tech tips cover ice maker rework and a bail-arm failure on this model.
| Code | Meaning | Display |
|---|---|---|
| Er t1 | Freezer temperature sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t2 | Freezer defrost sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t3 | Fresh-food temperature sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t4 | Fresh-food defrost sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t5 | Convertible-zone (VCZ) temperature sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |
| Er t6 | Fresh-food ice maker tray sensor open or shorted | Shown on display |

Reading a code safely
- Write down the code exactly, including letters (E5B vs E58).
- Note whether it appeared during a cycle or only after a reset.
- Power-cycle once (unplug or switch the breaker off for a minute). If the same code returns, the condition is still present.
- Do not repeatedly reset an appliance that shows heating, gas or electrical codes.
Online troubleshooting is preliminary guidance, not a diagnosis. Electrolux appliances use different control platforms, sensors and diagnostic logic depending on the model, and several failures can produce the same symptom — internal testing is often needed to identify the actual failed component.
