Troubleshooting

Electrolux dishwasher not draining: causes and what to check

Short answer: i20 on an Electrolux dishwasher means the water did not drain in time. In Electrolux's own list of causes, the first ones are outside the dishwasher — a knockout plug left in a new disposer, a kinked hose, an incorrect drain installation — then a blocked filter or sump, and only later the drain pump itself. Also make sure Cancel/Drain was used correctly: the door must be closed within about two seconds.

What this usually means

The complaint: Water left in the tub, or i20 on the display.

The same complaint can come from more than one system, so the useful question is which system — not which part — before anything is replaced. The causes below are ordered by how often they explain this symptom on the Electrolux families listed, and each one is tied to a check you or a technician can make.

Normal behavior to rule out first

  • A small amount of water in the sump under the filter after a cycle is normal.
  • On EDSH4944 models, if the door stays open more than about 2 seconds after Cancel, the dishwasher goes to standby without draining.

Electrolux models this applies to

This guide draws on manufacturer service documentation for these Electrolux families. Other models follow similar logic, but the exact diagnostic path depends on the model and control platform.

  • Electrolux built-in dishwashers (EDSH, EI24ID, EW24ID, EI24CD)

Possible causes

Listed roughly from most to least common for this symptom. Several can produce the same result, which is why a technician tests before replacing parts.

  1. Disposer knockout plug not removed

Listed first by the manufacturer for new installations.

  2. Clogged filter or sump

    Typical repair: $180–$330.

  3. Kinked hose or drain loop too low

DWTT2418: the drain loop must be at least 32 in. off the floor.

  4. Sink drain or disposer clogged

  5. Drain pump blocked or failed

    Typical repair: $180–$330.

Stop and call a professional if you notice

Smoke, sparking, a burning smell, melted wiring, any electrical shock, a gas odor, severe overheating, damaged refrigerant lines, or water reaching electrical parts. Turn the appliance off or disconnect power only if you can do it safely — for a gas odor, leave the home and call the gas utility from outside.

What you can safely check

  • Remove and rinse the filter assembly in the bottom of the tub; wipe out debris in the sump.
  • Run the disposer and confirm the sink drains well.
  • Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks and that it loops up high before connecting.
  • To cancel and drain: press Cancel and close the door within 2 seconds.

What a technician checks

  • Reads the three stored alarms, runs the drain pump in the actuator test and checks for voltage at the pump; clears the pump and sump; replaces the pump only if it fails these checks (DWTT2418).

Typical repair cost

Drain pump or sump/filter cleaning$180–$330

Estimated repair ranges represent typical repairs under normal service conditions. Your final cost depends on the exact model, the parts required, supplier pricing and availability, what diagnosis finds, and the labor involved. Additional labor may be needed when the appliance has to be pulled out, uninstalled and reinstalled, or when cabinetry, trim, panels or other components must be removed to reach the failed part. Parts prices change with supplier availability, market conditions, shipping and import costs. You receive the final repair price for approval after diagnosis and before any repair work begins. The $75 service call is applied toward an approved repair. Labor is covered by our 90-day labor warranty, and qualifying parts carry the applicable 1-year manufacturer warranty.

When to schedule service

If the safe checks above don't solve it, or a code returns after a reset, schedule a diagnosis. Online troubleshooting is preliminary guidance, not a diagnosis. Electrolux appliances use different control platforms, sensors and diagnostic logic depending on the model, and several failures can produce the same symptom — internal testing is often needed to identify the actual failed component. A $75 service call covers the diagnosis and is applied toward the approved repair.
