Troubleshooting

Electrolux washer not draining: causes and what to check

Short answer: On Electrolux front-load washers, E21 means the water did not pump out fast enough. The manufacturer's own test starts outside the pump: a restricted drain hose or standpipe, then the pump filter, and only then the pump and its wiring. Cleaning a clogged pump filter (coin trap) behind the lower front access is often all it takes.

What this usually means

The complaint: Water stays in the drum, the cycle stops, or E21 appears.

The same complaint can come from more than one system, so the useful question is which system — not which part — before anything is replaced. The causes below are ordered by how often they explain this symptom on the Electrolux families listed, and each one is tied to a check you or a technician can make.

Electrolux models this applies to

This guide draws on manufacturer service documentation for these Electrolux families. Other models follow similar logic, but the exact diagnostic path depends on the model and control platform.

  • Electrolux 300–700 Series front-load washers (ELFW models)
  • Electrolux LuxCare front-load washers (EFLS627 / EFLW427)
  • Electrolux LuxCare front-load washers (EFLS517 / EFLS617)
  • Electrolux Laundry Tower (ELTE electric / ELTG gas)

Possible causes

Listed roughly from most to least common for this symptom. Several can produce the same result, which is why a technician tests before replacing parts.

  1. Clogged pump filter or blocked pump

Socks, coins and lint trap here; the manufacturer's E21 test removes the pump to check for blockage. Typical repair: $180–$400.

  2. Kinked or restricted drain hose / standpipe

Electrolux's E21 test begins with the drain hose and standpipe before the pump.

  3. Failed drain pump

    Typical repair: $180–$400.

  4. Pump wiring or control drive circuit (E23/E24)

    Typical repair: $280–$680.

Stop and call a professional if you notice

Smoke, sparking, a burning smell, melted wiring, any electrical shock, a gas odor, severe overheating, damaged refrigerant lines, or water reaching electrical parts. Turn the appliance off or disconnect power only if you can do it safely — for a gas odor, leave the home and call the gas utility from outside.

What you can safely check

  • Make sure the drain hose is not kinked behind the washer and that the standpipe or laundry sink is not clogged.
  • Clean the drain pump filter behind the lower front access panel: put towels and a shallow pan down first, drain the small hose if your model has one, then unscrew the filter slowly — the drum water will come out. Use caution
  • Never open the pump filter right after a hot wash; let the water cool. Use caution

What a technician checks

  • Reads the stored codes and runs the drain pump & spin test in diagnostic mode.
  • Checks pump wiring and pump condition per the tech sheet, then the control's pump drive.

Typical repair cost

RepairTypical range
Drain pump or pump filter service$180–$400
Main control or user interface board$280–$680

Estimated repair ranges represent typical repairs under normal service conditions. Your final cost depends on the exact model, the parts required, supplier pricing and availability, what diagnosis finds, and the labor involved. Additional labor may be needed when the appliance has to be pulled out, uninstalled and reinstalled, or when cabinetry, trim, panels or other components must be removed to reach the failed part. Parts prices change with supplier availability, market conditions, shipping and import costs. You receive the final repair price for approval after diagnosis and before any repair work begins. The $75 service call is applied toward an approved repair. Labor is covered by our 90-day labor warranty, and qualifying parts carry the applicable 1-year manufacturer warranty.

When to schedule service

If the safe checks above don't solve it, or a code returns after a reset, schedule a diagnosis. Online troubleshooting is preliminary guidance, not a diagnosis. Electrolux appliances use different control platforms, sensors and diagnostic logic depending on the model, and several failures can produce the same symptom — internal testing is often needed to identify the actual failed component. A $75 service call covers the diagnosis and is applied toward the approved repair.
